Check out my chat with Wayne Kennedy!

waynek

“Wayne Kennedy has all the defiant passion and mad vocal energy you would hear with a punk band but performed by strumming the ever-loving-sh*t out of an acoustic guitar. For 11 years, Wayne Kennedy has been heavily involved within the independent music scene of Southern Ontario. From performing in punk bands, The Red District, and Television Warfare, to being a well known music promoter. Most notably, he was behind the infamous $2 Punk Shows at The Spill in Peterborough, and the Moustache Club in Oshawa, from 2012 to 2016. Wayne Kennedy started performing as an acoustic punk songwriter in 2014. He has performed at various festivals across Ontario, such as KOI Fest, Broken Arts Fest, and Peterborough L.I.V.E. Wayne has also spoken at high-schools, colleges, and universities, about songwriting, and his experiences building music scenes from the ground up and adhering strongly to a D.I.Y. work ethic.”

Check out my interview with the wonderful Tyson Galloway !

We’re gonna chat about balancing priorities (like being a professional musician AND a dad AND a husband AND a music teacher), making music as a means of being well, teaching music, and being a man who is invested in learning about feminism.

Born and raised in Cobourg, Tyson is a freelance musician, currently instructing at Long and McQuade. He is experienced in a variety of forms of music from jazz to country. On the side, he’s a husband and father, as well as a nature and history buff. Tyson can be seen, locally, with acts like Washboard Hank and Madman’s Window.

Cailey McCormack is a young professional with a heart of gold from Port Hope. She is a lover of the outdoors, dogs, and wellness all while building a successful career. She’s passionate about social justice, and has a unique and compassionate approach to her activism, operating from the perspective that people come from good intentions and that it’s useful to meet them where they’re at. She says, “when creating positive change in any kind of community you can’t underestimate the power of effective and compassionate communication”.

Cailey is also a valuable thinker and world-builder when it comes to the concept of minimalism, connecting it to overall health and wellness in an accessible, practical way.

Cailey is a fixture at Turtle John’s Friday night karaoke in Port Hope, ranging in song choice from Sublime to Johnny Cash. When she’s not making change in her community, you can often find Cailey hanging out with her one year old dachshund, Reese, at her family’s cabin in the woods.

Jeff Wheeldon is a real estate agent in Brighton, where his family has been building community since 2016. Jeff chose to enter politics as a way of serving others, and feels at home in the Green Party where service is prioritized over self and constituents take priority over party. He is inspired by the core values of the Global Greens movement, and the way that elected Greens conduct themselves with integrity and openness to working across party lines.

He was originally drawn to the Green Party after reading Elizabeth May’s book Losing Confidence in 2009. In 2014 he was the founding CEO of the Green Party Provencher Electoral District Association, and ran in that riding in the 2015 federal election. In 2016 he joined the Green Party of Canada’s Shadow Cabinet as International Affairs Critic, a role he still serves in today.

Jeff holds a Master of Arts degree in Theology, specializing in ethics. He has travelled widely, and has worked in trucks and factories as well as higher education administration and real estate. Jeff joined the Rotary Club of Brighton in early 2018, and volunteers with St. Paul’s Anglican Church whenever he can. In 2016-17 he initiated and engaged with a committee of church leaders in another denomination to develop policies and programs promoting environmental stewardship as church practice across the country. Jeff is an avid reader and writer, and devoted father of two beautiful boys.”

Searching For a Former Clarity” by Against Me!

againstme-1403195391.jpg

“One fan wanted to know which older Against Me! songs referenced Grace’s wish to transition before she did. She said, “‘Searching for a Former Clarity’ with the line, ‘Confessing childhood secrets of dressing up in women’s clothes. Compulsions I never knew the reasons to.’ Both ‘The Disco Before the Breakdown’ and ‘Tonight We’re Gonna Give It 35%’ are about gender dysphoria. ‘Pretty Girls,’ pretty much all of [Against Me!’s 2005 album] Searching for a Former Clarity is about it, I guess, except for the obvious anti-war songs. At the time, the band was facing intense scrutiny from the punk scene about the politics of what label we were or weren’t on. That album was me saying, ‘I don’t even care about these things. Do you really want to know how it feels on the inside right now and what I’m really thinking about?'” – Rolling Stone

I’m a Transvest-lite” by NOFX

nofx-irving-plaza-21

“We have a song on the album called I’m a Transvest-lite where I talk about crossdressing and how I secretly did it when I was a teenager. And now I’m open about it.

After this record, pretty much all my secrets are out there, so I’ve lost all pride and shame, which are two things no one really should have.”  – Fat Mike via CBC

Ellen is a recent graduate from Acadia University’s Music Therapy program, but grew up in Cobourg. An outstanding classical vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Ellen is releasing new music in a couple short weeks. Her collaborative album “Like Coming Home” will be released on May 12 and will be available on Apple Music, Spotify, and all the other places you usually find your music. A review of the album states, “impeccable production, an award winning band for support and harmonies to warm your heart. Yes, it’s one of those musical experiences that every human being deserves”.

Delilah RushCale Crowe

maxresdefault.jpg

“Coming to the world from the hills of Alderville First Nation in Ontario, Canada, Cale was fuelled by music since he could tie his shoes and has been taking audiences on a turbulent journey since he first picked up a guitar at 13. Cale himself describes the songs that make up “Stars & Promises”, his debut EP, and the sophomore EP “Til You Let Me Go”, as different stages of his own life, each telling a different chapter of the same story.

Aside from the record, Cale’s unique performances uses little more than an acoustic guitar and a few effects pedals and has given him the opportunity to perform across central and southern Ontario alongside acts like Ron Sexsmith, Scott Helman, Gentlemen Husbands, Jimmy Bowskill, SarahMark,2016 SOCAN Songwriting Prize Winners Fast
Romantics, and countless others.”

When it began, Cale’s journey into music was an escape from the trials and tribulations of a socially awkward teenager. Now it’s a chance to connect with like-minded people worldwide and share his experiences through the power of an acoustic guitar and a loop station.

Sometimes you have to stand as one in order to reach the many.”

I heard The Hannigan Sisters (Eile and Ayisha) play tonight at The Stars of Port Hope Civic Awards and they sounded gorgeous. So gorgeous, in fact, I made a video of the second song they sang and came home to convert it to an MP3 so you can all hear just how gorgeous that 3.5 minutes was.
These teens also play with their family’s band, Clan Hannigan, which also includes their very talented mum, Saskia Tomkins.

“I’m Done” by Bad Cop / Bad Cop

Based out of LA, this feminist punk band is signed to Fat Wreck Chords and released their most recent album, “Warriors”, in June of 2017.
The story behind their new album is especially powerful. After the release of their first album, “Not Sorry”, Bad Cop/Bad Cop toured often and one of their singers, Stacey Dee, began partying too hard. It began to affect the band, but with the support of her bandmates and her label, Stacey was able to receive treatment and work towards wellness.
“Warriors” is the product of Stacey reuniting with her bandmates to create something new after a significantly challenging experience.
“We tend to stick up for the underdog,” Dee concludes. “It hurts us when anyone is marginalized. I was so negative for most of my life. After changing my life, I have been trying to focus on strength, connectedness and positivity. I think this record is a good start.”

“Chick Singer” by Winona Wilde

“A child of Iraqi parents, [Winona Wilde] was born Noosa Al-Sarraj and became infatuated with playing classical music on piano at a young age. At the same time, her country music-loving nanny planted the seeds for her future devotion to artists like John Prine, Hank Williams and Loretta Lynn, and by her teens she discovered a natural ability to write songs in a similar style.

Noosa explains, ‘On my first album, I was too afraid to be good. On my second album, I was too afraid to be real. This time I feel like I am as real as I can possibly be, and the songwriting is infinitely more vulnerable.’”

The woman who describes her music as “Canadian Feminist Folk” mostly calls Peterborough home and can be found playing just about all over the place. Winona Wilde‘s newest album “Wasted Time” just came out this past October 6. She recognizes that memes are the most powerful medium for social commentary and expresses such through her limited social media presence. She studied Art History and English at Carleton University, but hasn’t been able to do anything especially meaningful with her degree so she should probably omit it from her bio. Born In Port Hope, when it still had a hospital, she’ll most likely die here as well. Not in the hospital. Because there isn’t one. Hopefully asleep in bed. Or smothered by kittens. Either or. “
